The red-tail dwarf puffer, also sold as the red-eye red-tail puffer, is a small freshwater puffer under 2 inches. Males are brown with cream stripes and a red tail; females are plainer. Keep one alone, or one male with two or more females, in a heavily planted 15 gallon or larger tank with soft, fine sand to bury in, and no other fish.

A sponge filter gives gentle flow and cannot pull in small fish. It runs from an air pump, with airline tubing and a check valve, all sold separately.
Aqueon QuietFlow Internal Power Filter 5–15 gal
Rated by the maker for 5–15 US gal, which covers a 15 gallon red-tail dwarf puffer tank without being built for a far bigger one.

Seachem Prime 100 mL
Removes chlorine and chloramine from tap water at every water change.
Fluval Edge Thermometer
Shows the water temperature at a glance, so you know it stays within 75 to 82 °F.

Common red-tail dwarf puffer problems
- They nip and stalk other fish; keep them in a tank of their own.
- Their teeth overgrow without snails to crunch; feed small snails regularly.
- Coarse gravel hurts them when they bury themselves; use soft sand at least an inch deep.
Test the water first whenever fish look unwell: see what your readings mean, then match the symptom. For disease, a vet who treats fish can diagnose it and advise treatment.
