What you need
- A bottle or hatchery cone, an air pump and airline to keep the eggs tumbling.
- Salt water: salt sold for hatching brine shrimp, mixed as its label says.
- Warmth and light: a warm room or a heater, and a lamp.
- A fine net or brine shrimp sieve.
Hatching and harvesting
- Add the eggs to the salt water with the air running so they stay in suspension.
- Wait about a day (longer in a cool room).
- Turn off the air; empty shells float, unhatched eggs sink, and the orange nauplii gather towards a light.
- Siphon them out, rinse in fresh water and feed straight away; they are most nutritious in their first hours.
Which fish they suit
Fry of almost every species, nano fish such as chili rasboras and ember tetras, and fussy eaters. Adults of larger fish prefer frozen adult brine shrimp. Feeding fry.
