Describe the noise-sensitive setting
A tank beside a desk or bed creates a different tolerance for pump, water-return and vibration sounds than one in a busy living area. Identify the location and the kind of sound that would matter before choosing equipment.
This site has not measured noise levels. Manufacturer “quiet” claims are attributed to the maker and are not turned into a ranked decibel table.
Compare the mechanism
An air-driven filter adds an air pump and bubbles. A hang-on-back filter returns water across the tank rim. A canister has a pump body, hoses and an outlet arrangement. Each places potential sound sources in a different location.

Check the supported setup
Water level, trapped air, vibration contact, impeller condition and flow restriction can matter to equipment behavior. Use the manufacturer’s checks for the exact symptom and model rather than assuming a sound is harmless.
Do not improvise insulation or enclosure around equipment in ways that conflict with its ventilation, dry-location or access requirements. A quieter installation still needs to meet the manual.
Choose a maintainable arrangement
Leave access to inspect the intake, media and hoses. A configuration that makes ordinary maintenance awkward can leave a developing restriction unnoticed. Keep the manual’s stop conditions visible and do not continue operating damaged equipment.
The equipment comparison is useful for installation and service differences, not for claiming one model is independently quieter than another.
