Choosing between them
A size up is not always better: a filter rated for a bigger tank can push too much water for small or long-finned fish and needs more room behind the tank or in the cabinet; a heater sized for the gallons can still fall short in a cold room (the heater size calculator works it out for your room); a tall tank needs a stronger air pump than its gallons suggest (air pumps by tank size).
