Propagating aquarium plants: cuttings, runners and rhizomes

Most aquarium plants multiply on their own: stem plants from cuttings, vallisneria and dwarf sagittaria from runners, java fern and Amazon swords from plantlets, and rhizome plants by splitting the rhizome. Wait until a new plant has its own roots and a few leaves, then cut it free and plant or attach it.

How each plant spreads

When to cut

Leave a plantlet or runner attached until it has its own roots, usually an inch or more, and a few leaves. Then cut the runner halfway between plants, or pull the plantlet off gently. Floating plantlets can drift until you are ready to place them.
