EHEIM LiBERTY 75 (2040)
EHEIM rates it for aquariums up to 75 litres (19.8 US gal).
EHEIM’s small hang-on-back filter with adjustable flow: a red knob sets the pump from about 40 to 100 US gal an hour, and the filtered water runs back over a slide. It comes with its filter cartridges in place.
Consider: It runs on EHEIM’s own cartridges, so replacements come from EHEIM. EHEIM says the water slide keeps the return quiet, and the intake pipe’s depth changes how the water moves in the tank.

Pump output, filter circulation and maximum flow are measured in different ways. Your filter will move less water than the box says once media and hoses are in. Measure it with the flow calculator.
Before choosing this model
- Measure behind the tank: the filter is 4.1 in wide and stands 5.3 in out from the glass. On a tank with a hood you may need a cut-out for it.
- Keep the water above the minimum level marked on the intake pipe: below it, the filter won’t start again after a power cut.
- In a tank deeper than 12 in, EHEIM says you may need its intake extension (part 7600090) to reach lower water.
What EHEIM doesn’t publish
- EHEIM gives the flow for its 50 Hz pump only; we list the top of its range, 100 US gal an hour, as the maximum, and the 60 Hz pump sold in North America may differ.

Choose and care for mechanical, biological and chemical media before buying replacement supplies.
Included items & upkeep
- filter body with pump, and a lid that doubles as a tray for carrying used cartridges
- intake pipe with the red flow knob and a suction basket
- a large bio foam cartridge, and two or three more cartridges depending on the size
Plan for the routine work
- Change the cartridge that clogs first every 2 to 4 weeks and the others about every 10 weeks, never all at once, so the bacteria in the rest keep working.
- To clean the impeller, pull out the intake pipe with the red knob: the impeller comes out with it.
- Never let it run without water.
To budget for replacement media and supplies, use the first-year cost calculator. For how often and how to clean it, follow the maker’s manual.
