EHEIM professionel 4+ 600 (2275)

Manufacturer-rated for 63–158 US gal aquariums.

EHEIM’s square canister filter with a priming button, a prefilter on top that catches coarse dirt and lift-out media baskets, holding 1.6 US gal of filter media; its pump moves 330 US gal an hour and lifts water up to 5 ft 11 in.

Consider: The square canister is 9.4 in wide and 9.6 in deep, so it needs more cabinet floor than EHEIM’s round classic for the same tank; in return the prefilter on top takes the coarse dirt, and the baskets lift out for cleaning.

US version, item 2275. Check what’s in the box before you buy.

Rated for a 65 gal tankDrawn to scale on a 65 gallon (example). 17.8 in tall in the cabinet; the dashed box is room to lift the head and baskets out, and the hoses need a route over the back rim.

Pump output, filter circulation and maximum flow are measured in different ways. Your filter will move less water than the box says once media and hoses are in. Measure it with the flow calculator.

Before choosing this model

  • Set it below the tank, upright, with the top of the pump head at least 10 cm (4 in) under the water surface.
  • Measure the cabinet: the canister is 9.4 × 9.6 in and 17.8 in tall, plus room to lift the head off.
  • Use EHEIM’s own 16/22 mm hose, cut to length, with no kinks or loops, and keep any air stone away from the intake pipe, or the filter draws in air.

What EHEIM doesn’t publish

  • EHEIM gives the flow and power for its 50 Hz pump and publishes no separate figures for the 60 Hz pump sold in North America, so a US filter may not move exactly the 330 US gal an hour listed.

Our buying guides size it for these tanks:

75 gallon

A filter rated for your tank can still be too tall for your cabinet or too strong for small fish: see how to choose one.

Choose and care for mechanical, biological and chemical media before buying replacement supplies.

Included items & upkeep

  • pump head with priming button and canister
  • prefilter with a blue filter mat
  • 4 filter baskets with EHEIM MECH pro (two), bioMECH and SUBSTRAT pro media
  • white filter fleece
  • hose connector with shut-off lever
  • hose (16/22 mm)
  • intake pipe with strainer
  • spray bar and outlet elbow
  • suction cups with clamps

Plan for the routine work

  • To start it, hold the spray bar above the water, make sure the prefilter is empty, and press the priming button quickly until the canister fills; then plug it in.
  • When the flow drops (EHEIM says about every 3 to 6 months), clean the prefilter first and the baskets only if that isn’t enough. Renew the white fleece at every cleaning and the blue mat after its third cleaning; every third or fourth full cleaning, keep a third of the old SUBSTRAT pro and bioMECH and refill the rest with new, so the bacteria stay.
  • If the fine pad clogs before you can clean it, turn the Xtender knob: the flow goes up again and EHEIM says the biological filtering carries on for a few days. Clean the impeller gently; its shaft is ceramic.

To budget for replacement media and supplies, use the first-year cost calculator. For how often and how to clean it, follow the maker’s manual.
