hygger Hang-on-back Canister Filter 6W
Manufacturer-rated for 10–20 US gal aquariums; 100 GPH flow rate.
A closed filter box that hangs on the back of the tank, with its pump in the lid and adjustable flow, 0.3 US gal of media (250 g of ceramic rings, a black sponge and one 8D sponge) and three outlets to choose from: a straight pipe, a rain bar and a duckbill nozzle. A surface skimmer on the intake takes up the oily film.
Consider: Its skimmer can pull in baby shrimp and very small fish: hygger’s answer is a piece of sponge or mesh over the skimmer’s intake. Expect it to gurgle for the first hours, or up to two days, while the air works out of the box.
US version, item HG108. Check what’s in the box before you buy.

Pump output, filter circulation and maximum flow are measured in different ways. Your filter will move less water than the box says once media and hoses are in. Measure it with the flow calculator.
Before choosing this model
- Measure the rim: hygger’s clamp takes glass up to 0.7 in (18 mm) thick, and the plastic trim on a rimmed tank can stop it opening.
- It can also stand beside the tank instead of hanging, when the tank is the same height as the filter.
What hygger doesn’t publish
- hygger lists this size as 5.5 × 3.5 × 3.6 in (14 × 9 × 9.2 cm) without saying which figure is the height. Hold the filter against the gap behind your tank before you set it up, and keep the box until you know it fits.

A filter rated for your tank can still be too tall for your cabinet or too strong for small fish: see how to choose one.

Plan for the routine work
- Unplug it before you open the lid.
- When the flow drops, check the intake for anything stuck, then clean the impeller and its shaft: they come out after you undo the screws.
- When you start it again, fill both the intake pipe and the media chamber with water, as hygger says, or air in the box keeps the flow weak.
To budget for replacement media and supplies, use the first-year cost calculator. For how often and how to clean it, follow the maker’s manual.
