Check three spaces, not one
Measure the cabinet opening, the usable internal space and the path needed to remove the filter. Door hinges, braces and shelves can reduce the opening even when the cabinet looks larger than the published canister dimensions.
The Fluval 107 and 307 illustrate why exact model dimensions matter. Their bodies and service requirements are not interchangeable.
Reserve the hose and valve space
The body dimensions are not the entire installed envelope. Check where the hose connections exit, how the valves are operated and how the hoses reach the aquarium. Follow the manual’s routing and height conditions.
A sharply compromised hose route is not a valid fit merely because the canister door closes. Keep the hose path visible in the plan and confirm the required bend and mounting arrangement from the manufacturer.
Plan access with water present
You will service a wet filter rather than an empty catalog object. Allow room to isolate the unit, catch drips and remove the media assembly. Do not assume you will move a filled aquarium to get more access.
Read the opening sequence in advance and make a simple checklist of the required access points. If one remains inaccessible, choose another installation position or filter format.
Keep stand suitability separate
This checklist considers equipment clearance only. It does not assess the aquarium stand’s load capacity, floor structure or modified cabinet construction. Use a stand suitable for the exact aquarium and obtain qualified advice where support is uncertain.
Compare filter formats if the canister installation does not work in the available space.
