Heaters for a 5 gallon tank

15 heaters in our catalog are sized for a 5 gallon tank. To hold 78 °F in a room at 70 °F with a lid on, Aqueon’s chart gives 50 W and Fluval’s 50 W for 5 gallons, so a heater near that size suits most homes. Below the list come the ones that are out, and why.

The charts are for an average room. In a colder room, or a tank without a lid, work out your own figure in the heater size calculator; for a warmer one, the smaller heaters here are enough.

Rated for it, but more than it needs

These cover 5 gallons, but they are much more powerful than the makers’ charts ask for. If its thermostat sticks on, an oversized heater overheats the water faster.
