50 gallon fish tank: dimensions and equipment

A broad three-foot Aquarium Masters format.

The maker lists product dimensions separately from its rounded nominal size. Use the product dimensions shown here for this AM11051. It is not an Aqueon 50 and does not inherit Aqueon stand or lid part numbers.

36.5 in long 18.88 in high 18.25 in deep

Aquarium Masters 50 Regular, AM11051 dimensions. Measure your inside water column separately. This is an equipment checklist, not a stocking plan or structural assessment.

Dimensions and top variants apply to the exact model. These match the named manufacturer format, not other brands with the same volume label.

Check the installed span for this exact tank. Package dimensions do not establish fit. Measure the support ledges, brace openings and space for the rear accessory strip. Confirm the current package and its matching top before fitting it.

Open the weight worksheet for this tank. It leaves substrate, decoration, equipment and stand weights unknown.

Complete each equipment job

  • Use the exact tank and lid identifiers below. Match a suitably designed aquarium stand to the exact tank and support instructions; include its load and service space.

Check stand and lid fit →
  • Choose material and depth for the intended care plan, then calculate the amount from the inside footprint. Record dry weights and displaced water separately. A generic pounds-per-gallon rule cannot describe every substrate.

    Calculate substrate quantity →
  • Compare service space and published ratings for the actual water volume. The wider front-to-back footprint adds an outlet-placement question that watts and gallons cannot answer.

    Compare filters →
  • If the chosen filter is air-driven, add its pump, airline, check valve and required fittings. Match actual depth, outlets and lift-tube height; keep backup mode as a separate check. A HOB or canister does not automatically require a sponge system.

    Build an air system →
  • Choose the intended water temperature and note the cooler room conditions. Use the exact heater chart, working water volume, allowable placement and an independent thermometer.

    Read heater sizing →
  • Confirm the exact fixture span and mounting arrangement. For plants, check measurement depth and conditions where the maker publishes PAR; watts alone do not establish light at the substrate.

    Check light fit →
  • Choose the actual parameters you need to measure. A general freshwater master kit does not automatically include GH and KH. Follow the current conditioner label for new water; this plan does not generate a dose.

    Plan water tests →
  • Leave room to reach the back of the footprint and work out your replacement-water route before buying the stand.

    Choose water-change tools →
  • Keep connections dry, identify equipment plugs and follow the manual’s drip-loop and disconnect instructions. If a backup air pump is part of the plan, include the air path and check its battery behavior.

    Plan electrical access →

Set this equipment up in order, then make the separate cycling-readiness decision.

Checkboxes are a temporary page checklist. Printing preserves the current selections.

Measurements still to finish

  • Exact external dimensions and stand requirements for the selected aquarium.
  • Internal waterline dimensions and displacement for working volume.
  • Tank trim, wall clearance, lid openings and lighting mounts.
  • Cabinet opening, hose route and room to remove filter media.
  • Water-change route, container size and electrical access.

Use the volume tool and electricity estimate once the measurements and device labels are known. The first-year planner keeps unpriced supplies visible.

Filters rated for this tank size

The manufacturer’s tank-size range includes 50 gallons for these filters. Compare installation space and upkeep, then choose for the fish and plants you plan to keep.

Manufacturer-rated for 40–70 US gal aquariums.

Fluval 307

Mid-size external filter with distinct pump-output and in-system circulation ratings.

Consider: A cabinet that fits the body can still leave too little hose or service room. Measure the full route and removal space before choosing this larger canister.

Manufacturer-rated for aquariums up to 55 US gal; needs 3 in wall clearance and fits trim up to 1 in.

Seachem Tidal 55

HOB filter with adjustable intake and return flow, surface skimmer, heater holder, and basket media.

Consider: Needs 3 inches behind the tank and trim no thicker than 1 inch. Measure both; a wall position that fits the Tidal 35 may not fit this model.

Manufacturer-rated for 20–50 US gal aquariums.

Fluval AC50

Four-stage hang-on-back filter with adjustable flow, a reusable media basket, and maker-rated maximum flow.

Consider: The media basket lifts upward. Leave unobstructed space above the filter so routine cleaning does not require moving the tank.
